Theyyam from North Kerala

Theyyam dance from North Kerala is one of the oldest dance forms, predating to 500 BCE. It is known as the dance of the gods, and is performed in praise of Goddess Bhagavati. Training is given at a young age; the children are trained in making costumes from coconuts husks and painting faces as well.

Theyyam is not performed on a stage but in front of devotees. It can go up to 12 to 24 hours with short breaks in the middle.

The musical instruments accompanying this dance are the Chenda (drum with sticks) and Kuzhal (double reed wind instrument).

The costumes include a war bonnet and a breastplate. Kuruthola or the cloth is made from stalks of coconut palms. Makeup is done by a specialist and is very intricate and colourful.
